Hope this helps any of you without costing you the 6 hours it took me. Tried it again using 3.40 on usb drive and had to repeat this procedure. Anyway, after doing all that, my ps3 works exactly as it did before, but I cannot update to 3.40. Be nice if sony bothered to research and include the actual steps required to fix this stuff. I thought I was completely screwed here too, but at least got back to having a functional ps3 instead of a brick. another screen (i think) later, press select + start.put hd back in ps3, put usb stick in ps3.shut down pc, take out hd, take usb drive too.copy that rom to usb drive in folders PS3 => UPDATE => put rom named PS3UPDAT.PUP here.get the rom of whatever version you were on before you upgraded - i had to search, but i found the us 3.30 rom.format in NTSF - that's right, NTSF - don't use quick format.open up disk management - in win7 it asked me to make a master book record, so I did.connect hard drive to pc (running windows 7 64bit, but any windows os should work without other software). If that's what you have, this fixes it (or did on my 80 gig ps3). Here's quickly what I did to end the endless loop.
